Novel Method for an Optimised Calculation of the Cross-Sectional Distribution of Live Loads on Girder Bridge Decks

One of the main goals in design girder bridge deck systems is to determine cross-sectional distribution live loads across different girders that make up cross-section deck. Structural grillage models and current standards based on a Load Distribution Factor (LDF) provide oversized designs, as demonstrated this paper. This research introduces novel method allows decks be calculated by applying matrix formulation reduces structural problem 2 degrees freedom for each girder: deflection rotation deck-slab at centre girder’s span. Subsequently, parametric study presented analyses response 64 total 384 load states. In addition, authors compare outputs with those obtained using traditional calculation methods. Finally, experimentally validated two levels: a) laboratory test small-scale application states; b) real full-scale over Barbate River during its static test. Based analysis, maximum divergence proposed from experimental less than 10%.
